Short story/poem 3
A man, he stands strong and tall but inside he crumples and cries for help that he'll never receive. His smile once so bright and full, it may now look the same from a far but when you dig a little deeper you can see the sorrow in those fading smile lines and the slight downfall at either end of his lips.
He tightens his eyelids together as if to make what is so nightmarish in front of him drift away just as his hope did. When he opens his eyes once again the rubble in front of him hasn't formed back into a house or any structure at all for that matter. He takes steady, suspicious and slow steps towards the mess in front of him. As his camouflage uniform tears and frays due to the broken wreck he's stepping over.
He's scared to find what could break him the most. He's scared to find something so perfectly in tact that it seems like nothing has changed even though so much has. Even though he prays and begs he won't find what he fears his luck manages to get worse. His son's room. With a bed still made neatly topped off with his son's favorite teddy rested against the pillow. It's like he hasn't come home to absolute disaster and maybe not everything has been destroyed. But it has and that's reality.
He falls to his knees as memories of his now gone family roll from his eye down onto his cheek. His head lays droopy and his legs go numb. He is sick and sad a terrible combination. The abandoned town now in rubbles is no hope for him. He's stuck in a nightmare that never ends. An endless loop of depression. That's when the decision becomes so clear it seems as if it should have never been doubted. There is nothing left for this poor man, he has nobody.
He lays on his back and rests his hands lightly over his lower stomach. If one shall find him drowning in the heat maybe they will make an impact on the future but it's hard to know just what the future may hold. Especially for the broken soul of a man in an endless sleep.
